A week after the Benfleet 2nds destroyed Hadleigh 2nds at John Burroughs, the 3rds turned out for the same fixture. If Hadleigh thought this was their chance to get their own back for that disaster - they would soon think again, despite Benfleet only fielding 10 men.
Their nemesis from last week, Troy Nicholl, was on the easy list (back strain), and so being unable to bowl was offered to the 3rds as a batsman (nice). Benfleet lost the toss, and after some deliberation were put in to bat on a hard early season wicket.
Hanson and Jackson started us off, playing watchfully and putting away any chances that came their way before Kev Hanson missed one with the score on 34.
Jacko continued to make progress until……….Yep you guessed it …. another LBW when on 25.
On this occasion, it must be said, it looked a very poor decision from the boundary and needless to say Jacko was less than happy. The umpire (P. Haisman-Baker – ex-Head at Canvey County Juniors) was given the full treatment : 12 second pose – bat high overhead, emphasising giant stride down pitch, blatant head shaking in disbelief, and finally funereal-paced walk back to the bench.
I’d say it’s the worst decision since Alg Pritchard said ‘I think I’ll pop down the barber’s and see if they can do anything with my hair’ !!!
This unhappy event, did however bring an unusual sight – that of a New South Walesman (Troy) and an Old South Wales Man (R.Edwards) at the crease. Rob’s first start of the season saw him ‘orchestrate’ a ton partnership, with Troy clattering the ball to all parts and Rob picking out a supportive 16 before being caught.
As the innings drew on Troy was joined by J. Scarf and the only issue was whether our Aussie would get his 150. We soon found out - on 144, with the declaration imminent, he attempted one pull too many and was bowled by A.Klass !!!!!!!!!! (ex-Benfleet of course).
The target of 225 looked a big ask for a youngish Hadleigh side.
With only 10 men and injuries mounting, (Jacko knee, D.Ware knee, K.Hanson thumb, R.Edwards too many to mention), Benfleet had to work hard to contain the chase, but with plenty of runs on the board it enabled Jacko to put in some attacking field placements to good effect. The other issue of rotating the small pool of bowling was also achieved, by using J.Scarf and L.Wilson as spinners, thus avoiding their bowling restrictions. Runs came, but wickets also fell periodically - B.Carter picking up two and starting to look more dangerous with every game. D.Ware also had a short spell, bowling quite sharply uphill and into the wind, but the main bowling credits were for J.Scarf who took four wickets with an assortment of off/leg breaks, that kept us in the hunt.
With overs running out, Benfleet pushed for the kill, but just could not get the wickets required.
With 2 wickets needed off the last over, the draw became inevitable.
Although denied a first win of the season, there was some good cricket and an excellent effort in the field, especially from the bowlers. With our batters scoring 200+ in both league games so far, we are looking quite handy when batting first, and there is hope that our first win is not be too far away.
Either way, Hadleigh will not want to see Troy again this season !
Next game : Away to Old Southendians
