--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to family commitments M.Willis was leaving early (18:30) so M.Ware did the honours and led the side away to Old Parks. After a shrewd assessment of the wicket (from 100 yards away!) and with the promise of some sunshine, ‘Benny’ won the toss and put us in to bat !

A.White and M.Jackson took the field and a run-fest was anticipated as neither of these boys hang about.

The game started with some lively swing bowling from Old Parks, and in just the second over, Jacko chased a wide one to a waiting slip/gulley and we were one down. M.Willis showed a bit of intent cracking several fours, and hogging the strike

before departing with a dreadful head-up tilt at a straight one for 13. Two men down and just 20 odd on the board, what we needed was a partnership, and that’s exactly what we got.

The ship was well and truly steadied, with A.White and J.Walkinshaw settling down and seeing off the openers. It has to be said the 2nd line bowling was a totally different kettle of ‘pie’, but you still have to play it, and each ball is an opportunity to get yourself out. A.White batted very well, punishing the bad ball, while defending properly when called upon. J. Walkinshaw at the other end should probably have been asked to provide a urine sample - as he set about the Old Parks spinner.

These two put took us to 145 before the 3rd wicket fell, with Walkinshaw getting trapped in front trying to pull for a very valuable 83 (sorry mate it was plum).

As so often happens once the ‘spell’ is broken, the wickets tumbled, A.White reached his personal best (bowled for 56),

Taz (J.Webster) made a rapid 27 and at the death, B.Carter an explosive 21 including a couple of big sixes.

But the rest of the side failed to trouble the scorer. The only other notable batting stat was Amrish Johshi’s 5, of which 2 should go to Taz, who at one point made Amrish run a 3 when the lad was set on a gentle single ! This display of Army fitness from Taz , had Amrish so worried that it was no surprise to see him club the next ball back to the bowler to avoid any more punishment. With several failures around those mentioned above, we reached a reasonable score of 245 at the break.

The Old Parks reply began in disastrous fashion with three wickets falling for 25 runs, with wickets for S.Rowe (2) and J.Heath making the breakthrough. Benfleet hopes were raised, and an early finish was looking possible, but then with the new ball starting to wear Buxton and Cox began to chip away at the target. Cox (45) hung around for a while but Buxton’s 91 proved decisive before he was run out by D.Brady with a superb piece of fielding in the deep.

Heath added a second wicket to his haul but Old Parks had enough in hand to see it through.

On balance Benfleet should really have posted a 270/280 under the conditions to give Old Parks a real target, but too many cheap wickets fell, and as a result of this win Parks move up to 2nd in the table.

Next up : Home to Leigh on Sea
