BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Lost 8 Wickets
Benfleet IIIs v Leigh on Sea
16th July 2005
Benfleet : 174 all out.
Leigh : 176 for 2. Leigh won by 8 wickets : Benfleet 4 pts, Leigh 18 pts.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At our level Leigh are one of those dodgy teams, you think you’ve got them but every time you play them you end up losing more often that not. True to form it happened again….
On paper we were confident of doing the business – but cricket never was played on paper of course.
Leigh won the toss and, as they are wont to do, put us in to bat. They rattle through the overs and are not afraid to chase a total.
Our ‘end of the pier’ duo of Jazza and Jacko started the game but Jacko didn’t hang around, succumbing to a Yorker with ‘diddly’ on the board. A.White (in good form of late) took it up and this partnership moved the score along. Jazza was then caught one handed by gulley for 33 but we had plenty to come with the score already on 50 odd. It was at this point that the afternoon started to unravel.
J.Walkinshaw (80+ last week) went for 0 to a prod to short mid wicket, this brought in N.Edwards who knows the time of day but also gave a chance early and was caught for 5. P.Hiscock getting a rare bat at 6 (normally playing in the 2s) chipped in with a valuable 31 before figuring in a classic yes/no run-out.
J.Scarff – 0 also fell. Then the fun really started….. M.Willis watched the first ball cautiously onto the bat, before taking a hideous swipe at the next one – bowled for 0, A.White eventually fell – stumped for 79, then A.Joshi down on one knee sweep/paddling – caught for 0, and M.Johnson LBW for 0, leaving S.Rowe hanging on for 9 not out.
Six batsmen had been dismissed for ducks yet the total had somehow risen to 174 (one run short of 2 more batting points !!!). 130 odd thanks to A.White/A.Jarrett/P.Hiscock.
Leigh set about their task without needing to hurry.
Suffice to say, it was knocked off without any undue dramas, and a wicket apiece for N.Edwards and J.Walkinshow.
I have to say, this was probably the most despondent I have been on a cricket field, the disappointment of our batting, was compounded by a total lack of interest in the field in some cases.
A very poor showing indeed.
Not many of us could walk away from this with any satisfaction at all.
Lets hope it was a bad day at the office and we can bounce back.
Next game : Hadleigh at home. .
