Hang on – who’s that ????
Its only Jonny Wright !
Yep the vice captain made his first appearance for the 3s this season and after last week’s blank week (needed to erase the memory of Leigh the week before), optimism had ALMOST returned to the 3s camp. At least there was thought’s of putting the ‘Leigh shambles’ right.
On a very grey, rain threatened afternoon, we got underway with Hadleigh winning the toss and putting us in to bat. Notwithstanding Hadleigh’s ‘appointed’ umpire appearing (a couple of poor decisions last time we played – IN OUR OPINION !), we were looking to make a good score.
M.Willis feeling focussed despite arriving from Swindon that morning, decided to open the innings with Jazza in the hope of finding some form.
It has to be said that Hadleigh’s bowling was absolutely dire to start with, several 8/9 ball overs and plenty of extras coming. But both batsmen looked comfortable with the pitch being pretty benign.
The scoreboard ticked over and the 50 was up without any issues encountered. The batsmen attempted to keep up with the ‘extras’ column but it was not easy to do, then with 100 on the board we received a change of fortune. An appeal from Hadleigh went up, with Jarrett hit on the outside of this left pad, shouldn’t be an issue….. and as non-striker, your correspondent turned to ensure his own bat was grounded and await the next delivery, only to find the dreaded Haisman-Baker (umpire) finger raised.
Cue slow walk back from Jarrett and disbelief in most home quarters.
Jacko joined the fray, and after hitting a couple of nice shots came to a sticky end. Batt/pad and everything else seeming to get in front of a slow ball, but it still managed to find a way through, bounced, trickled, and finally dislodged a bail.
A.White (four 50+ innings on the spin) came to the crease and kept the score moving before falling to a very smart leg side stumping when on 14. M.Willis then fell on 72 missing a push to mid-on and getting bowled off his pads – still a new pb for De Niro – at least there would be some beer to drink!
Benny Ware and Jon Wright picked up the baton, hitting a rapid 23 (caught) and 38 (another dodgy LBW !) and a good total was assured. The tail did not wag this time and 250 for 5 turned into 262 all out - but it was a decent total to defend.
Hadleigh started their reply with the clouds gathering, and were one down very early. P.Frensham on the 45 executing a smart run out with a direct throw – good work Frenchie.
As the prospect of rain increased and eventually started, Haisman-Baker got Hadleigh off the field and 30 minutes or so were lost due to a heavy shower.
With sawdust deployed and the rain finally relenting, ‘HB’ got us back on and we needed another 7 overs or so for the game to become ‘official’. Hadleigh settled down with Gibbons and Vapiwalla both getting 50s. Indeed at one point they threatened to have a go at the target (albeit at 13 an over).
Then S.Rowe got Gibbons trapped in front on 80 for a small reward, but with Haleigh in the 190’s and the rain returning HB waited a full couple of minutes to ensure the 200 came up before getting us off again.
With roping off to do, the Benfleet boys got a ‘drowned rat’ soaking before heading for the showers.
A close game was abandoned as a draw with 8 points each awarded.
Next game : Home to Old Souths.
