Hmm. Old Souths eh ???
Those that were there recalled the return fixture earlier this season, when we were destroyed by a single batsman who took the game out of our reach with a 30 ball 100.
A few glances assured us that he wasn’t here today and we breathed a little easier.
Then we noticed their skipper was also missing AND that they had only 10 men… could be interesting.
They may be top of the league but today might be a different story.
When Old Souths won the toss and decided to BAT the plot thickened further.
Either they were confident of bowling us out or they didn’t fancy a 250-300 run chase.
With A.Waters and J.Heath paired together for the first time this season, we were looking to get into them early, and sure enough, we got it the case with Old Souths getting off to a shocker.
In the very first over ‘The Messiah’ worked the oracle with Jazza taking a nice stumping as one of the opener’s fell over to the leg side. Heathy then got the other opener with a top edge spiralling behind the wicket keeper, and Jonny Wright ducking round the back to take it comfortably – 2 down with only 4 runs on the board !
‘Gandhi’ Waters responded from the other end getting their number 3 LBW, making it 11 for 3.
With Old Souths showing no inclination to either stay around, or play scoring shots the option was taken to get the fielders in close. A couple more wickets, notably, again to Gandhi via an edge to gulley – expertly taken by J.Walkinshaw low down. Leaving Old Souths 19 for 5 !!!!
If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it goes the saying, so the seam boys continued.
Despite a bit of a stand adding 25 for the next wicket it was only a matter of time before we got through again, and Gandhi took a very sharp return catch to make it 3 wickets apiece with Heathy.
The result looked a formality and the only matter unsettled was, who would get the five-fer !
As a bowling change was threatened the lads struck again and it was a straight race for the prized fifth wicket. Ghandi it was who removed the off stick and a meagre total of 83 had been set with only 25 overs bowled.
A short interlude then, before we set about the reply. A.Jarrett and A.White opening didn’t find much to trouble them and within minutes the score had raced to 30 without loss. Soon after Jazza got a good’un which pitched on leg stump and hit his off peg – 40 odd for 1.
Jacko came to the crease looking to score some much needed runs and included a nicely picked up six to backward square before falling on 15, swatting across the line. The game was all but won with J.Walkinshaw joining Andy White who was rapidly closing on a 50.
Despite various signs and arm waving, a 2 was hit to win the match, leaving Andy on 49 not out…
Classic jug avoidance I call it, but a comfortable and welcome 18 point victory, over in time to catch the football results.
Well bowled A.Waters and J.Heath – good spells from both winning the game.
Willis, Wright, Rowe, Scarf, and Taz ALL getting a TFC !!!
Next game : Away to Southend.
M.Willis : 8/8/05
