26th August 2006

Benfleet : 250 for 8 dec. D.Nash 60.
Hadleigh : 251 for 5 Orsett won by 5 wickets. Benfleet 10 points, Orsett 18 points.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Orsett had given us a good whopping back in the early summer when we were very weak, so with a team bolstered
by D.Ware, T.Russ and D.Nash as well as the usual suspects we were hopeful of being more competitive this time
around. Winning the toss on a goodish looking pitch (despite the weather) we batted first hoping to get 8 points
under our belts in case of rain later.

J.Walkinshaw and D.Ware started us off and both looked reasonably comfortable agaainst a fairly strong
Orsett attack. Things were progressing nicely when Walkinshaw left a ball outside off, which came back
sharply to lay flat his off stump ! It was a bit of a shock as not much had moved before but Jimbo was on his way
for 10.

This brought out Nashy in his favoured 3 berth and he and Dan settled down to restart the innings.
These two accumulated well and we were back up and running until Dan took a bit of a chance on a straight
one and was bowled for a handy 39. Jacko then came out and continued to push along with Nashy.
Again both looked comfortable and we got to point scoring range before the partnership was broken, Jacko having seen one skier dropped didn't get a second chance and he went for a useful 34.

Nashy pushed on to score a valuable 60 before falling but we had now got in a good position for a
200+ score with some young and fresh batting still to come. Benny Ware (young and fresh ??) came
out and hit a very good 30 off around 20 balls including a lovely straight six, and the final batting merits
went to Rob Parmenter who played a lovely attacking/defend cameo to score a tidy 34 not out which
pushed up to 250, and a total that may trouble Orsett if we could get among them.

Our bowling attack looked a tad underpowered but we were bolstered by Pete Hitchcock who was
taking a breather from the 2s and hopefully could get some help from the pitch.
Pete opened the innings from one end and then settled into it with his familiar line/length for the
duration !

Orsett don't suffer from a weak batting line up and executed a pretty good run chase, reaching the
target with 2 overs to spare, but Pete's nagging line/length had given him 3 wickets in a marathon
24 over spell for 88 runs, while at the other end Tony Russ showed a bit of promise, and Benny Ware
had a rebirth as a spin bowler, mixing 'leggies and offies' to good effect and taking a wicket.

At the end of the day we managed to get them 5 down to add a couple of bowling points but the
result was never really in danger though we tried to apply some pressure in the middle of the innings.

Orsett are probably worth champions in this league and we at least competed today.
With that loss, all hopes of promotion are pretty much gone now and hopefully we can give it
a good go in our last two games which are both winnable and finish around 4th.

Next week : Away to Old Souths.
