BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Lost by 8 wickets.
Benfleet v Old Southendians
Old Souths won the toss and elected to field.
Benfleet 120 all out, Old Souths 123 for 2
Old Southendians 18 points, Benfleet 0.
A warm, hot day and Old Souths won the toss.
Early in the season we had a niggly draw at Shoebury Park and it is always nice
to try and get a win in the return fixture after such a game, but Benfleet were pretty weakened by some key unavailabilities due to football/holidays etc.
Benny Ware and Dan Brady both got out early for 10 and 9 respectively, and Jacko and Willis fared no better with 4 apiece, leaving the top four wickets down with just 34 runs on the board.
Young Gavin Blowes then played a very sensible innings with Paul Lewis after Grand Handley also failed. Gav and Louie shared a handy stand, with Louie perishing for 28 and Gav top scoring with 30.
The only other resistance of note was Jamie Hodgson who batting with the tail added a very mature and useful 16 runs but it wasn't enough to get us any batting points and we were done for on 120 all out.
Old Souths in reply, took on Louie and Grant Handley who both bowled hard but
were unable to prevent the runs accumulating. Eventually Grant nabbed both openers but only after they had put 93 on the board. His first wicket was a classic off-peg clean up and he also had a lovely moment when his young son Sam held on for a smart catch off the old man's bowling !
It was also a chance to let Sam have a bowl and it was great to see a young spinner take on the openers - bowling tightly with good variation he ended with the creditable figures of 8.1.26.0.
Oh well another loss.
Next up : Away to Old Parks.
