BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Benfleet 1st XI v Epping on Sat 26 Apr 2008 at
BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Won

Saturday saw the return of the sun and cricket to Woodside Park. The first team welcomed Chris Edmunds, one of our two overseas boys, to the ranks. The day started well with the skipper managing the win the toss and Tremmers finding a replacement bat to his liking having managed to break his at nets on the Thursday. Epping were invited to bat and Chris soon broke through knocking over one of their openers with a lovely in-swinging yorker. Milesy resumed where he left off last year with an excellent opening spell taking 2 for 25 from his 9 overs. Epping had one batsman of note (Khan) who, with a few lusty blows, put together a score of 70 odd and ultimately helped them to a score of 191 for 7 off their 45 overs. Phil Wright put in an excellent spell in the middle of the innings going for just 23 from his 8 overs and claiming a wicket. Sean Pritchard took 2 wickets and also restricted the batman well. Gazza bore the brunt of Khan’s attack but nevertheless showed signs in his nine overs of some good early season form.

Our innings got off to an eventful start with their opening bowler bowling three consecutive beamers at Dave Wright. Wright wasn’t happy and the umpire was even less impressed banned their lad from bowling again from the rest the innings. Their skipper had the raging hump with the umpire and decided to finish the over himself. Up he trotted off about three steps and bowled the perfect in swinging yorker knock back Dave’s middle stump. Now as you can imagine Wrighty was not a happy boy, he’s faced four balls, three he couldn’t reach and the other he couldn’t hit - 9 for 1. Phil Wright came in and with Tremmers put together a useful stand taking us up to the 50 mark in quick-time. Phil went for 23 flashing at a wide one but Mikey T and Tremmers carried on the good work taking us past 100 within 20 overs. Paul eventually went for solid 36 and Mike followed a few overs later for a ‘jug avoidingly’ close 48. Although it took a while coming, victory was always within our grasp and the Epping’s total was passed in the 43 over with the skipper managing to scrape together 35 by the end.

All in all a really promising start – everyone got a game and we won. Next week, Basildon at home in round 2…….
