Stock v BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Sunday 1XI on Sun 27 Apr 2008 at 2.00pm
BENFLEET CRICKET CLUB Won by 170 runs

2008 Sunday cricket kicked off at Stock in fine style. The first team welcomed 3 overseas players with both Chris and Ryan making sunday debuts and Jye Cajar from our sister club Albion Park in Aus playing a one-off match. David Wright has returned as skipper this year in a post that is as cursed as the Defence Against Dark Arts position in Hogwarts School and his first job was to win the crucial toss. 'Heads' (for girls in beds) proved to be the match winning call. Sean 'the baron' Pritchard and John 'the hitman' Hearn made full use of the hospitable leg-side boundary with a 132 opening stand in 20 overs. The baron made a blazing 86 and the hitman produced a trademark unbeaten 50 upon retiring to leave Reevie well behind in their race for the best average and more importantly jug of beer at the end of the season. Billericay's David Cole was brought on for stock and with some help from some generous home umpiring decisions saw U16 captain Chris 'Garfield' Coldicott and Jye 'Monkey's Head' Cajar depart with 4 and 0 respectively. Cajar's Brendan Burn's like attempt to put the Stock spinner out of the park ruined any chance of making a club record partnership. The skipper Wright made an uncharacteristic quick fire 60 in 9 overs with 5 sixes off the toe, middle, edge, splice and back of his bat. Ryan, making his sunday debut managed to hit a house and shatter a window in the pavillion showering a baby in glass in a rapid 47. He now knows what jug avoidance means. A score of 267 for 9 in 40 overs was always going to be a big ask for Stock.

The game was won inside 9 overs of the stock innings with the overseas Chris and Ryan knocking over the top order. Chris cleaned up their main threat while the hitman produced cat like reactions at 1st slip when Ryan dislodged Stock's skipper. Martin 'Benny' Ware produced a spell of bowling that any grandad would have been proud of knocking over 3 batsman with a West Indian 'You miss, i hit' policy. Luke 'Shirley' Slatford and Monkey's Head both spun in wicket maidens and U16 spinner Adam 'Shrimper' Marsh capped a top display with an excellent spell of spin bowling that with more luck would have seen him pick up more than 2 wickets. Stock all out for 97.

A comprehensive victory and great start to the season for the Sun 1sts...a tougher test in Leigh-On-Sea up next...
